How to Install Gas Valves

Considering the irreparable incidents caused by negligence or lack of knowledge about the safe installation of connections and gas valves, understanding the principles of installation and adhering to relevant standards is essential. Join us to learn more about this important subject.

1. Valves used in gas piping systems up to 50 mm (2 inches) in diameter should be of the brass, quarter-turn ball type and threaded according to national standard No. 4047. For diameters greater than 50 mm, they should be of the steel, quarter-turn ball type, flanged, welded, or threaded according to the National Iranian Gas Company standard No. (1994) IGS-MS-PL-010.

2. The diameter of the subsidiary valve must be the same as the diameter of the gas pipe entering each apartment.

3. If a property has several separate buildings, each building, in addition to the main shut-off valve, must have its own shut-off valve.

4. The main consumer valve should be installed immediately after the meter at a height of 180 cm from the floor.

5. Subsidiary Valve – Residential Unit Valve: In buildings with more than one residential unit, a valve should be installed on the branch pipe of each unit, branching off from the main pipes, at an appropriate height away from physical damage and accessible to the residents (approximately 180 cm high) for quick and complete flow shut-off.

6. The axis of the valve pipe for all gas appliances should be horizontal, parallel to the wall, and in the direction of the gas appliance; exceptionally, lighting valves can be installed vertically.

7. The endpoints of the piping (and valves) should not be located behind doors or gas appliances.

8. The valve handle should be fixed to the valve using screws and nuts.

9. The valve must remain completely leak-proof when closed under an air pressure of 0.7 bar (10 pounds per square inch).

10. All valves should be installed at the time of inspection.

11. Installing a 50 mm (2-inch) valve on a pipe with a diameter of 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) using a reducer is permitted.

12. For gas appliances located between shelving, the branch valve should be above the height of the shelves and should not be directly above or behind the gas appliance.

13. In places where the gas valve is adjacent to electrical switches and sockets, junction boxes, or fuse boxes, the gas valve should be installed at least 10 cm higher than the switch or socket or at a horizontal distance of 10 cm from them. If the valve must be placed below the switch or socket (at a lower level than the mentioned level), it should have at least a 10 cm horizontal distance from the edge of the switch and socket or be at least 50 cm away from it.
